Was the other commentator Ian Darke?? I thought it was Bob latchford??

Re: Michael Owen
Yeh was Ian Darke, never know why sky stopped using him, like him for boxing too. Just got in and watching extra time again, MO said 'no other place quiet like it, brilliant under the lights to play there'.

wasnt owen saying it was in the box but he didnt think it was handball in the first place?

Re: Michael Owen
There's no debate needed as Owen is a truly horrendous commentator and might as well have been sat in the gantry wearing an Everton shirt and holing a blue and white rattle.

Great footballer, dull and bias commentator.

But fuck him, we're through!

Re: Michael Owen
My pal was working for the BT outside broadcast people at Upton Park a few games ago and I was talking to him after a game when Michael Owen came bowling out of the ground with a big smile on his face and more or less yelled 'you alright lads'?

A very reverential West Ham dad with his two little kids sort of shyly asked if he could take a photo of him with his kids and Owen put his arm on his shoulder and said 'of course mate, let's go over here out of the way' and picked the two little kids up under each arm and posed laughing and joking for a good five minutes.

Maybe I'm getting old and sentimental but I must say I was very impressed at how he put the bloke at ease and obviously made him and his kid's day. I only saw him for five minutes tucked out of the way, chatting to a dad who seemed a bit overawed and messing around with his kids but it was enough to form the impression that he's a good-natured soul at heart.

Chim- that's nice to hear. Lots of people probably wouldn't have gone to that bother

To be fair to Owen he does come across as a decent bloke in general, but a woeful commentator. Still, not his fault BT hired him and put him in the commentary box.

Re: Michael Owen
Owen constantly contradicts his own commentary, I find him quite annoying. At one point he was banging on about how Valencia should have received at LEAST a yellow card for a high boot, yet didn't think the Everton player earlier in the game should have even been booked for catching Enner in the face with a boot.

You could hear the absolute glee in his voice when Everton scored the 2nd. Unlucky.

I didn't think he was biased to be honest.

Re: Michael Owen
Was probably a little biased, many of them are, but a big over reaction on here, which is no surprise of course.

Let's make one thing clear though, Owen really didn't give a fuck who won the game.

Re: Michael Owen
I actually don't mind Michael Owen and it must be difficult to keep neutral when its your team scoring.
Noone particularly minds during England matches I notice.
That said you need to be professional and not betray your loyalties and let it affect your analysis ie ANDY TOWNSEND
Gary Neville has always been good about Man U (I think that was most peoples worry about him when he started) though he was a bit on the edge after the Southampton game.

Re: Michael Owen
sven

completely different scenario, if you are watching your national team, with english commentators, you expect them to be behind the national team, as most of the people watching/ listening to their commentary would be. league games however will have a fan base probably about even watching the game, so you would expect more professionalism and less bias.

BT sport is good with the sound muted

Sven Roeder 9:50 Wed Jan 14
Re: Michael Owen
I expect commentators on national games to want England to win and be pleased when they do but not to cheer lead.
They should still analyse the game properly and not call every tackle in our area as a pen and the reverse as not a pen. Like Andy Townsend does in most English teams Champions league games.

Proper dull cunt...

So's Phil Neville...

El Scorchio 9:50 Wed Jan 14
Re: Michael Owen
I did also notice that he said Everton's first pen was a good one- rolled almost down the middle, and then that Noble's wasn't such a good one, despite it being very, very similar.

Private Dancer 9:54 Wed Jan 14
Re: Michael Owen
El - I noticed that too, but their first pen was straight down the middle, which always seems to be considered a good pen, where Nobles was to one side of the keeper, if the keeper had gone the right way it would have looked a terrible pen.
